In March 2022, people across the country took notice of the Peacocks when the men鈥檚 basketball team made a historic and remarkable run to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament. While some fans were completely new to Peacock Nation, some supporters were faithful over the years. One example is National Political Correspondent for NBC News/MSNBC Steve Kornacki.听

on the TODAY Show when he covered the Sweet 16 teams. He shared that he got his Peacocks gear before the team鈥檚 March Madness run.听

Perhaps it was this affinity for SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 that motivated him to accept an invitation to speak on campus this month.听

Ginger Gold Schnitzer, executive director of the Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership, was interested in developing a program that would shake things up and get students motivated to participate in a primary election.听

The Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership at SA国际传媒 Peter’s University was established in 1994 to be a forum for the thoughtful discussion and analysis of key public policy issues, be a bridge between classroom learning and real world politics, and to promote civic engagement.听

鈥淭he presidential primary season is a great opportunity to focus on voter education and participation,鈥 explained Schnitzer. 鈥淚 believe that many of our students don鈥檛 yet feel part of this important season in our national politics. In my mind, there was no one better than Steve Kornacki to excite and encourage them.鈥澨

Schnitzer was thrilled when he accepted the invitation. 鈥淚 knew his energy and engaging style was exactly what we needed to heighten our campus鈥 interest in, and understanding of, the presidential primary season.鈥

Schnitzer鈥檚 intuition was right! The event was extremely well-attended with an engaged audience of students, faculty, administrators, local media and community members.听

The covered the content of his talk in great detail, particularly Kornacki鈥檚 focus on polling data that has been observed this election season.听

Before Kornacki left campus, the SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 community sent Kornacki on his way with an Elite Eight basketball, a brand new SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 hoodie and an open invitation to come back to campus anytime.听听听

Samar Issa, Ph.D., assistant professor of business administration at the Frank J. Guarini School of Business at SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 University, always had an interest in understanding why the 2008 financial crisis happened. To answer this question, she examined all of the financial metrics for 89 corporations across six leading industries including technology, financial, pharmaceutical, auto, airline and energy. She invested two years into preparing a paper, which reviewed two decades worth of data since 2000.听

John E. Hammett III, Ed.D., associate dean and director of the M.B.A. program; and Samar Issa, Ph.D., assistant professor of business administration at the Frank J. Guarini School of Business at SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 University, at the Bright Idea Award ceremony.

The paper, titled Optimal corporate leverage and speculative cycles: An empirical estimation, ultimately determined that borrowing is not a bad thing, but excess leverage can put the economy in a state of instability. The paper also established a model that calculates an optimal debt level. Her research also revealed that the United States was at the edge of another crisis, but COVID stimulus packages saved many of the big corporations that she was researching.

Dr. Issa鈥檚 manuscript was quickly noticed by the wider business community and was published in a top-leading, high-impact journal titled Structural Change in Economic Dynamics.听 However its impact did not stop there. The paper was also published in the 22nd annual volume of the Publications of New Jersey Business Faculty, which is produced by the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University. A total of 114 papers were submitted for the publication and Dr. Issa鈥檚 was one of the top ten manuscripts selected to receive a 鈥淏right Idea Award.鈥 The Bright Idea Award is given to intellectual contributions that have the greatest impact on business practice and/or advance knowledge in the discipline.

In a letter to Dr. Issa, Joyce Strawser, Ph.D., dean of the Stillman School of Business shared, 鈥淲e are so proud of your work and the intellectual capital that resides within our great State!鈥

Beyond Dr. Issa鈥檚 innovative research, she teaches courses at SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 at the undergraduate and graduate level in finance, economics, business analytics, leadership, project management and more. She also is the director of the Center for Leadership Studies and the former founding advisor for the Student Managed Investment Fund and the Chartered Financial Analyst Research Challenge.

Jersey City, N.J. 鈥 January 29, 2024 鈥 SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 University today announced that it has been awarded a $3.8 million Postsecondary Student Success Grant (PSSG) from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant was awarded for a project, titled Peacock Success by Optimizing Data and Support (PODS), which will improve academic success and increase retention, persistence and progress towards graduation. The SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 University proposal was one of only nine PSSG projects funded nationally.

鈥淭he PSSG grant enables SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 University to implement evidence-based strategies to improve student outcomes while also contributing to the national research on best practices and initiatives that advance student retention and completion of postsecondary students,鈥 said Frederick Bonato, Ph.D., executive vice president and provost at SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 University.

The PODS project implements three strategies to reach its goals. These strategies include:

  • An advising model. The new team-based retention model includes a professional advisor, faculty mentor and financial coach who will work collaboratively to support each SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 student. This model will enable SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 to more effectively and holistically address non-academic needs and will position faculty as mentors who can establish personal relationships with the students they advise.
  • Increased training on and an expansion of the University鈥檚 retention-data platform. SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 currently utilizes a student-success and retention platform, which enables faculty and staff to monitor students鈥 academic performance, provide early alerts, share information to increase student support and coordinate resources when help is needed. Through PODS, the University will hire a dedicated retention data specialist and expand professional development to support more faculty and staff to use the platform in order to determine more data-informed, targeted and effective retention interventions.
  • The establishment of a Male Resource Center. A Male Resource Center (MRC) will be established within SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 Center for Academic Success and Engagement (CASE). The Center is designed to increase academic, social and cultural support for male students. The MRC will accelerate institutional efforts to improve the academic achievement and postsecondary outcomes for male students.

“This grant is a testament to our commitment to student success, providing holistic support through innovative strategies,鈥 said Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of SA国际传媒 Peter鈥檚 University. 鈥淚 would like to congratulate and thank the team that led the development of this transformational project and also express my gratitude to all who will be involved in its successful implementation.鈥

According to the U.S. Department of Education, the Postsecondary Student Success Grant (PSSG) Program is a grant program designed to equitably improve postsecondary student outcomes, including retention, transfer (including successful transfer of completed credits), credit accumulation, and completion, by leveraging data and implementing, scaling and rigorously evaluating evidence-based activities to support data-driven decisions and actions by institutional leaders committed to inclusive student success.
